The people I wouldn't vote for are in power now, locally and regionally, and they do not care about what I care about. When I write my congressmen and women I get nice little form letters that tell me that sure there are problems... but what I want won't really fix anything.
Yet oddly they offer no solution - just an argument against any solution posed from across the aisle. And I basically sit through these tired, typical political ads ready to pop a vein because they're completely fear driven, based on half truths and deliberate misinformation.
This one started out simply enough... a lady said she was a breast cancer survivor. I almost thought it was one of those ads for the hospitals that deal directly with cancer patients, but I was soon all too aware it was nothing more than emotional manipulation to drive our fear driven district into action against health care reform.
The tip off was the use of the word "government" as a pejorative. We have the greatest country in the world!! But we can't trust the government to run anything!
Except the military, the judicial system, education, transportation, police, firefighters... even

Do you folks even know what you're fighting against anymore??
Per this woman's "testimony", she was fortunate enough to live in the great USofA to get treated for her cancer, which is why she's alive today. God forbid she'd live somewhere like the UK, who she claims has a higher mortality rate for cancer than the US, where she'd have likely DIED because it would take her months to see a doctor.
Scary stuff, huh?
Too bad it ISN'T TRUE.
Factcheck.org blew the lid off of this phony baloney tactic last year when they confronted the American Cancer Society themselves regarding the comment made, that asserted "300,000 women might have died" if we had a government run health care system like England. A spokesperson for the ACS said that the figure itself is unreliable because it's nothing they have ever said or would ever say.
That's problem one with this ad.
The second is that even if it was true (and it's not), it wouldn't qualify as a true comparison because the HCR our government is currently deciding on is not a single payer, government run option.
That's what many of us on the left *want*, mind you... but that's not what's happening. We were willing to settle for a public option instead, which was simply an option for those who couldn't afford the high (and increasingly higher) cost of health insurance.
The answer is right there in the name, folks. A public (that's you!) having an option (that's a choice!). Quit throwing a tantrum or else we're going to have to leave the store and go home.
No, what's happening is we're going to see stuff pass saying we have to get insurance, but no real alternatives for those people who can't afford it simply because of ads like this. It's meant to motivate people too damn stupid to fight for their own good, none of whom are going to be happy until they kill every good thing about the bill out of irrational fear and blinding ignorance.
Who'll end up winning big? Big insurance, as always.
And just guess who provided the "facts" for those numbers and statistics?
Go on. You can say it. It's okay.
Only in America will they spend more than a million dollars for an ad to fight against something that could have benefited from that same exact million dollars.
Here's my question... how many women who can't afford cancer treatment have died since September when this ad began to air? If they *really* wanted to save the lives of women, why not donate that million+ to provide charity care so the government doesn't HAVE to step in?
Ah-merica.
Here's the kicker. Here's what gets me every single freaking time. I live in a state that is supposed to be super duper religious. It's Jesus country down here in Texas, folks... except we conveniently forget what he commanded us to do when it might cost us something - like taxes the BIBLE SAYS we're supposed to pay.
When it comes to fighting "queers" in Houston, you're on board. You will devote huge segments out of their lives to ambush evil no good dirty sinners wherever they happen to hide to force them to repent out of shame and humiliation.
Never mind that Jesus didn't do that - EVER - in his ministry.
But heal the sick for free?
He did that PLENTY. (and commanded us to do the same)
What you're basically saying is that you'll fight for a baby to be born, but if it (or especially the mother) gets sick and needs care after that, it's not worth a few precious dollars out of your pocket to do anything about it.
You want to hear some statistics? How about the more than 40,000+ people who die each year because of a lack of medical coverage? They talk about waiting months to go see a doctor after finding a lump - what about the working class woman who has no medical coverage but makes too much money to qualify for medicaid. What happens to her when she finds a lump?
And what are you going to do about it, other than spread filthy dirty lies to scare the bejeezus out of people?
Ah, but what's a little denial among friends, right? As long as you refute facts, that means it doesn't exist. An age old obstructionist tradition.
Enjoy holding on to that when you go one day to meet your maker and have to answer why you fought so hard to care for the least of these... and in turn turned your very backs on Jesus himself, just so you could have more of your money in your pocket.
Matthew 25
34"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'
37"Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
40"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'
41"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'
44"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'
45"He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'
46"Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
